My Freshman Year
A section of this segment that really stood out to me was about the greek life at AnyU. When I compared what I read from that university to that of Bloomburg's Greek life, it was extremely different. It actually kind of upset me because I am in a sorority at school and I did not at all appreciate the stereotypical comments made by students at AnyU. They talked about 'paying' for your friends, it's too time consuming, and how you become the opposite of an individual and just blend in. These comments anger me because actually being in Greek life I know that it didn't make me blend in, it really brought my personality and myself out. You don't conform to the sorority, everyone is so different and that's what makes us all work so great together. As for being time consuming, of course it is. That's what we signed up for, but it definitely is not a chore. I LOVE being with my sisters. Whether it's at social events or community service events, if it were up to me we would spend more time together. Finally, the comment about paying for your friends is what upset me the most. Of course we have to pay dues to pay for things like events, rent, and etc. But if people say I paid for my friends, I most certainly didn't pay enough. I did not like the way the students at AnyU talked about Greek life. However, I did like the statistic Nathan included about how students in greek life are much less likely to drop out of school than those who aren't. Moreover, the section about Greek life is definitely what stood out the most to me in this reading and is what I personally could relate to the most.
